The Thunderbolts couldn't find enough bounces to go their way through the first five games, but that came to an end tonight as the offense came alive in the third period, with four goals to earn a 5-0 victory over the Knoxville Ice Bears.
After a slow first period for both sides, the Bolts would score first, with 51 seconds left, as Carter Shinkaruk would score to give Evansville a 1-0 lead from Rory Rawlyk, which was Rawlyk's first point as a Thunderbolt. Shinkaruk would later leave the game after an awkward collision along the boards, and would not return with an upper body injury. In the third period, the offense came alive, as the Thunderbolts scored four times in the final 20 minutes. Nick D'Avolio made it 2-0 from Scott Donohue at the 6:06 mark, and Shayne Morrissey made it 3-0 from Eric Salzillo at the 14:20 mark. Knoxville would pull goaltender Hayden Stewart and go all-in, but the Thunderbolts would add another two goals from Chase Nieuwendyk and Brandon Tucker. Nieuwendyk's tally at 16:57 was assisted by Salzillo, and Tucker's at 18:01 was assisted by Rawlyk and Nathan Ferriero, his first point as a Thunderbolt. Ed Minney made 29 saves on the night, earning both his first pro victory, but his first pro shutout as well. Tonight also marked head coach Ian Moran's first professional coaching victory.
For Evansville, Tucker, Shinkaruk, Niewendyk, D'Avolio, and Morrissey scored a goal each. Rawlyk and Salzillo picked up 2 assists each, and Minney finished with a 29-save shutout. The Thunderbolts next game is at home on Thursday, November 8th, against the Fayetteville Marksmen. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:15pm CT.
