Joseph Mizzi, who came to the Thunderbolts following a 6-game stint with the Utah Grizzlies after concluding his junior career, played his third SPHL game tonight in Quad City. It was a standout night for the rookie, scoring twice, and assisting twice, including scoring the overtime-winning goal to defeat the Storm, 5-4.
Down 1-0 in the first period, Mizzi scored his first goal at the 14:39 mark from Eric Salzillo and Shayne Morrissey to tie the game at one-aside. Down 3-1 in the second period, it was rookie Tommy Besinger’s turn to light the lamp in his first pro game, making it 3-2 at the 9:32 mark from Mizzi and Carter Shinkaruk. The comeback was concluded shortly after at 11:35, as Morrisey picked up his first goal of the game to tie it at three, assisted by Salzillo and Mizzi. The Storm took a 4-3 lead in the third period, however Morrissey would tie the game once again at the 13:52 mark off a setup from Salzillo, also assisted by Mizzi. In overtime, Mizzi’s goal came only 42 seconds in, with an open net following a chance for Salzillo, to win it 5-4.
For Evansville, Mizzi picked up two goals and two assists, Morrissey picked up two goals and an assist, Besinger scored a goal, and Salzillo tallied four assists. Braeden Ostepchuk stopped 41 shots for the overtime victory.
